Symptom

When you attempt to push a new child variant to Shopify for a master SKU, the Publishing panel (or Sync Update) reports a Shopify 422 error with a message similar to:

Option values provided for unknown option(s)

The master SKU already has a Shopify product ID (it was published before), but the new variant cannot be added.

Why it happens

This error occurs due to a mismatch between how the Shopify product was originally created and how it exists now in Luminous.

Step 1 — Original publish (no options): The master SKU was first published to Shopify at a time when it had no child variants, or no option axes were defined (e.g., no "Size" axis with values S, M, L). Luminous took the simple-product path and created the Shopify product with a single default variant and no product options.

Step 2 — Variants added later in Luminous: Afterward, child variants were set up under the master SKU in Luminous with option values (e.g., Size=S, Size=M).

Step 3 — Push fails: When Luminous now tries to add those new variants to the existing Shopify product, it sends each variant with its option value (e.g., Size=S). Shopify rejects the request with 422 because the Shopify product was created without any options — it has no "Size" axis registered, so it does not know what to do with the option values being sent.

This is different from a blocked-before-publish error (where Luminous prevents the push because option values are missing on the child variants). In this case, the child variants are fully configured in Luminous, but the Shopify product itself has no option structure, so any attempt to add a variant with option values is rejected by Shopify.

How to resolve

Step 1 — Verify option axes and values in Luminous

  1. Go to Inventory and open the master SKU's product page.
  2. Click the Product Variants tab.
  3. Confirm the master SKU has at least one option axis defined (for example, "Size" with values S, M, L).
  4. Confirm each child variant has a matching option value set (for example, Size=S, Size=M, Size=L).
  5. If any option axes or values are missing, use the Bulk Create Variants button (Variant Builder) to define or rebuild them.

Note: If option values are missing on child variants (rather than this 422 issue), see the related article Why is my Shopify product publish blocked with a 'missing option values' error, and how do I fix it? instead.

Step 2 — Retry the publish

  1. From the master SKU's product page, open the Publishing panel.
  2. Click Publish Now (or run Sync Update to push only new variants).
  3. If the error is gone, you're done.

Step 3 — If the 422 persists after Steps 1–2

When option axes and values are correctly set in Luminous but the 422 still occurs, the underlying cause is that the Shopify product itself was created without options and cannot accept option-carrying variants through an additive update. The Shopify product must be recreated from scratch with options. This requires a support action — Luminous Support will clear the existing Shopify product link so Luminous can treat the master SKU as unpublished and re-push it, this time creating a proper Shopify product with all option axes and variants included.

When to contact support

Contact Luminous Support if:

  • Option axes and variant option values are correctly configured in Luminous but the 422 error continues after retrying.
  • You need support to clear the existing Shopify product link and coordinate the re-publish to avoid duplicate products in your Shopify store.
  • You are unsure whether the Shopify product was originally published without options.
