What 'Building missing days' means
The Stock Snapshot report serves date ranges by composing pre-computed, per-day snapshots that are built in the background. When you request a date range that includes days that haven't been built yet — or that have been marked stale — the report queues a background build job for each missing day and shows a progress dialog.
The dialog message "Building missing days (N of M)…" means:
- N — the number of days currently being prepared
- M — the total number of days needed for your selected range (including the day before your start date, which provides the opening balance)
The report polls automatically and loads as soon as all required days are ready. You can click Cancel at any time; the background build continues and the data will be ready the next time you open the same range.
Typical wait times
| Situation | Expected wait |
|---|---|
| Yesterday's data (T-1) | Already pre-built nightly — loads immediately |
| Today's data (T-0) | Built on demand; typically under a minute |
| Historical range already built | Loads immediately |
| Historical range not yet built | ~30 seconds per missing day |
Why some days need to be rebuilt
A day is marked stale and queued for rebuilding when:
- A receiving report's date was edited and the change falls inside that day's window.
- You click the Refresh button in the cache banner.
- The day had never been built for your account's date range.
What happens if a day fails to build
If a day's background job fails, it is retried automatically up to three times. If all three attempts fail, the report falls back to computing that range using the legacy on-demand method — you may see a longer load time for ranges that cover that day, but the report will still load. Hitting Refresh resets the retry counter and gives the system another three attempts.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| Dialog appears every time for the same range | Click Refresh once the report loads to re-queue the failing days. |
| Dialog shows the same day count for a long time | The background job may be stuck. Contact support if it doesn't resolve within 15 minutes. |
| Stale banner appears without a recent receiving edit | A receiving report's date field may have been updated automatically. Click Refresh to recompute. |
| Export file is empty or has fewer rows than expected | Download again after the report loads successfully from the cache — the export draws from the same pre-built data. |
Note: This feature is rolling out progressively. If you see "Preparing report data…" instead of "Building missing days", your account is still using the previous range-cache system — see Why does Stock Snapshot show 'Preparing report data' and how does the range cache work? for guidance.
