Overview
When you publish a master SKU (a product with variants) to Shopify, Luminous requires every child variant to carry option values that match the master's option axes—for example, a "Size" axis with values like S, M, L. If any variant is missing those values, the publish is blocked and you will see an error similar to:
Cannot publish master SKU SHIRT-001: 2 variant(s) are missing Size option values (SHIRT-001-M, SHIRT-001-L). Open each size/color variant and set its option values to match the master, or recreate the variants with Variant Builder. Publish was blocked so Shopify would not get a product without those variants.
This block prevents Shopify from receiving an incomplete product (which would previously appear with only a "Default Title" variant or fewer variants than intended).
What Luminous auto-fills for you
Before blocking, Luminous attempts to auto-fill missing option values when all three conditions are met:
- The master has exactly one option axis (e.g., only "Size", not "Size" + "Color").
- The child variant's SKU ends with a recognizable option term separated by a
-,_, or/(e.g.,SHIRT-001-S→ infers Size=S). - The term is listed in the master's option values.
When auto-fill succeeds, the publish proceeds and you will see a yellow info toast on the Publishing panel listing which variants were corrected (e.g., SHIRT-001-S → Size=S).
If the master has multiple option axes, or the SKU suffix is ambiguous, auto-fill is skipped and the publish is blocked instead.
How to resolve the block manually
Option A — Fix the variants directly
- Open the master SKU's product page (Inventory → SKUs → select the master). Go to the master SKU's Product Variants tab.
- In the Variants section, click into each variant listed in the error message.
- Edit the option values on each flagged variant so they match the master's option list exactly.
- Return to the Publishing tab and click Publish Now again.
Option B — Use Variant Builder to recreate variants
Rebuild the variants. Delete the mismatched variants and recreate them using the Bulk Create Variants button, which opens the Luminous Variant Builder modal.
Frequently asked questions
Will Luminous automatically retry the publish after auto-filling? Yes—when auto-fill succeeds, the push completes in the same request. You do not need to click Publish Now again.
Does this affect simple (non-variant) products? No. The option-value check only applies to master SKUs that have child variants attached.
The error lists a variant I already set options on. Why is it still blocked? Verify that the option name on the variant exactly matches the option name defined on the master (case-sensitive). A master axis called Size and a variant axis called size or SIZE will not match.
Can I still push a partial set of variants and add the rest later? Yes—once all currently existing variants have option values, the publish will go through. You can add more variants later and use Sync Update (Publish panel → Sync Update) to push them to Shopify.
