Overview
The Luminous–Shopify integration is a two-way connection that handles three main data flows:
| Direction | What moves |
|---|---|
| Shopify → Luminous | Sales orders are pulled in automatically as they are placed in your Shopify store |
| Luminous → Shopify | Inventory (stock) quantities are pushed to Shopify on a scheduled cycle |
| Luminous → Shopify | Fulfillment and tracking information is pushed back to Shopify once orders ship |
This article focuses on the inventory push direction — how quantities flow from Luminous to Shopify, and how to trigger a manual update when you need one immediately.
How automatic inventory sync works
Luminous runs a background sync on a scheduled cycle. For every SKU linked to your Shopify channel, Luminous calculates a sellable quantity and sends it to Shopify automatically.
By default the quantity pushed is available stock, not raw on-hand:
Sellable quantity = On-Hand − Pending Orders (all channels) − Buffer
Because Luminous tracks open orders across all your sales channels (Shopify, wholesale, Amazon, etc.), the number sent to Shopify already accounts for stock committed elsewhere — preventing overselling.
Note: You can change this to push raw on-hand instead of available via a setting on the integration account. See Shopify Stock Push Settings: Controlling How Inventory is Pushed to Shopify for details.
How to manually push inventory to Shopify
If you need Shopify updated right away — for example after receiving a large shipment or adjusting a buffer — you can trigger a manual push from the Product Mapping page for your channel.
Step 1 — Open your channel's Product Mapping page
- Go to Manage → Channels in the left navigation.
- Click on your Shopify channel name to open its detail view.
- Select the Product Mapping tab.
Step 2 — Choose how many SKUs to push
You have three options:
Option A — Push all SKUs at once
- Make sure no rows are selected in the table.
- Click the Actions button (top-right of the table).
- Select Push All Product Stocks.
- Luminous queues an inventory push for every SKU mapped to this channel.
Option B — Push a specific set of SKUs
- Use the checkboxes on the left side of the table to select the rows you want to update.
- Click the Actions button.
- Select Push Products (N) — where N is the number of rows you selected.
- Only the selected SKUs are pushed.
Option C — Push a single SKU from its row
Each row in the Product Mapping table has an inline action button. Click the push/sync icon on the row for the specific SKU you want to update.
Step 3 — Verify the push ran
After triggering a push, check the Last Pushed column in the Product Mapping table. The timestamp updates when Luminous successfully sends the quantity to Shopify. You can also check the Status column on Settings → Integrations for a SUCCESS: Push Stock entry.
Key settings that affect what gets pushed
There are two places where push behavior is configured.
On the channel (Manage → Channels → Edit → Push Inventory Stocks and Costs section)
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Include Incoming Stocks as Sellable | Adds open purchase-order quantity to on-hand before computing the sellable number, so customers can order against inbound stock |
| Push Incoming Stocks from Supplier Purchase Orders | Sends a separate dated stock entry per open PO line — useful for Shopify stores that display future availability by expected arrival date |
On the integration account (Settings → Integrations → Edit)
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Use GraphQL for stock push | Uses Shopify's modern GraphQL API (recommended for most stores) instead of the legacy REST endpoint |
| Push stock to Shopify on-hand instead of available | Sends raw on-hand rather than the available/sellable calculation |
| Allow negative buffered sellable quantity | When on, Luminous pushes a negative quantity if your buffer math results in one, rather than flooring at zero |
For step-by-step instructions on these settings, see Shopify Stock Push Settings: Controlling How Inventory is Pushed to Shopify.
