Scoping a cost rule by HTS / HS tariff code

Cost rules can target products by their HTS (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) or HS code, so a tariff or duty rule applies only to the products that carry that code.

Before you start: add HTS codes to your products

  1. Go to Inventory → SKUs and open the product.
  2. Click the ⋯ menu (top right) and choose Edit SKU.
  3. On the Product Information tab, fill in HS/HTS Code and save. Products with a blank HS/HTS Code will never match an HTS code rule.

Setting it up

  1. Go to Inventory → Inventory Admin → Cost Rules and open or create an Extra Cost Rule.
  2. Choose the rule type:
    • Adjust unit cost — changes the unit cost on matching PO lines. Under Scopes, click Add Scope, set Scope Type to HTS code, and enter the code in Value.
    • Add extra cost line — adds a separate cost line (e.g. freight or import duty) to matching POs or shipments. Under Filters — which lines it applies to, click Add filter → HTS code, and enter the code. 3.Fill in the rest of the rule (name, vendor or conditions, pricing or cost basis) and click Create.

Where HTS codes come from

The HTS code is stored on the product (SKU) record. Make sure each product that should be covered has its HTS code filled in; products with a blank code will never match an HTS Code scope.

Tips

  • Prefix matching with Starts With is useful when a whole HS chapter carries the same tariff rate — enter the 4-digit heading and the rule covers every 10-digit subheading automatically.
  • Combine an HTS Code scope with a supplier condition to apply a tariff rule only when purchasing from a specific vendor.
  • Use the Preview button on any PO to confirm the rule is firing before committing.
  • To apply a tariff rule only when buying from a specific vendor: on an Adjust unit cost rule, pick the Vendor; on an Add extra cost line rule, use Add condition → Supplier.
  • To check a rule before it goes live, open a purchase order, click Edit, and on the items step click Preview cost-rule extra costs.
