Set Planned or Actual consumption basis on BOM lines so assembly orders deplete components correctly when yield varies from plan.
Collection: Work Orders: Admin Setup
Priority: P1
Who this is for
Account administrators and product managers defining how component quantities scale when finished good yield differs from plan.
Before you begin
- BOMs configured on manufactured SKUs
Consumption basis options
| Basis | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Planned | Component depletes fixed BOM quantity regardless of actual finished good yield |
| Actual | Component quantity scales proportionally with actual finished good output vs planned |
When to use each
| Component type | Recommended basis | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Labels, boxes, packaging | Planned | 10,000 labels used even if yield is 9,900 units |
| Bulk raw materials (liquid, powder) | Actual | Material scales with actual units produced |
| Fixed batch additives | Planned | Full batch size used regardless of small yield variance |
Steps
1. Set on BOM (recommended default)
Open the finished good's Bill of Materials and set Consumption Basis (or Basis) on each component line to Planned or Actual.
This default flows to assembly orders created by Quick Complete.
2. Override on assembly order (ops)
Production staff can change Basis per line on the assembly order form when completing a batch (Complete assembly orders).
3. Verify with a test batch
Run a Quick Complete with actual yield below planned. Confirm:
- Planned basis lines stay at fixed qty
- Actual basis lines scale down with yield
What happens next
Correct basis configuration ensures accurate component depletion and inventory costs when yield varies.
