If an order shipped completely but still shows as Partially Fulfilled in Shopify, it's almost always because of a non-shippable line item — usually shipping insurance or shipping protection. Luminous ships and fulfills your physical products, but it intentionally leaves these non-shippable lines alone. The fix is a one-time setting in Shopify (or in your protection app) that auto-fulfills them.

What's happening

Some products in a Shopify cart don't get shipped — shipping insurance, shipping protection, warranties, digital items, and gift cards. In Shopify these are flagged as "does not require shipping."

Here's the catch: "does not require shipping" is not the same as "does not need fulfilling." Shopify still creates a fulfillment task for these lines. They have no tracking number and nothing to pack, but until something marks them fulfilled, the order sits at Partially Fulfilled — even after the real products are on the truck.

Why Luminous doesn't fulfill them

Luminous is your warehouse/shipping system, so it only fulfills lines that actually get picked, packed, and shipped. A shipping-insurance line has nothing to pick and no tracking number to attach, so Luminous deliberately doesn't touch it. Fulfilling a "shipped" status against an item that was never shipped would be inaccurate, and it would put Luminous in the business of managing products it has no visibility into.

That leaves these lines for Shopify (or the app that created them) to close out — which is the correct owner for them.

How to fix it

Pick one of the options below. Option 1 is the cleanest for most stores.

If the line item comes from a shipping-protection app (Route, AfterShip Protection, Navidium, Shipping Guarantee, etc.), that app almost always has a built-in setting to auto-fulfill its own line item so it stops leaving orders partial. Open the app's settings and look for an option like "Auto-fulfill protection line item" and turn it on.

This is the best fix because the app owns the product and closes it out the moment the order is placed or paid — no extra automation to maintain.

Option 2 — Use Shopify Flow

If the item isn't from an app (or the app can't auto-fulfill), create a Flow:

  1. Trigger: Order created (or Order paid)
  2. Condition: line item requires shipping is false — or match on the specific product/SKU (e.g. your insurance SKU)
  3. Action: Fulfill line items for that item

This closes the non-shippable line automatically while leaving your physical products for Luminous to fulfill normally.

Shopify has a store-wide setting at Settings → General → Order processing → "Automatically fulfill the order's line items."

Avoid this one. It marks every line on every order as fulfilled instantly — including your physical products — which breaks the Luminous workflow and makes it impossible to tell which orders still need to ship. Only mentioned here so you don't reach for it by mistake.

Which items this affects

Any line marked "This is a physical product" = unchecked in Shopify, including:

  • Shipping insurance / shipping protection
  • Extended warranties or guarantees
  • Digital downloads
  • Gift cards (Shopify has a separate auto-fulfill setting for these)

Physical products are unaffected — Luminous continues to fulfill those as normal.

How to confirm it's working

Place (or look at) a test order that includes both a physical product and the non-shippable line. After Luminous fulfills the physical product and your chosen fix fulfills the insurance/protection line, the order should flip from Partially Fulfilled to Fulfilled.
