Symptom
On EDI purchase orders where two or more lines share the same SKU (for example, a size run ordered as separate lines), the outbound EDI 856 Advance Ship Notice may:
- Report fewer total units than were actually shipped (e.g. 14 instead of 15).
- Stamp every 856 line with the same PO line number — usually line 1.
- Trigger ASN rejections from trading partners that validate the 856 against the original 850 PO.
Root cause
When shipment rows are created for a duplicate-SKU order, the underlying link from each shipment row to its matching order line can point every row at the first order line. The 856 generator then matches all lines to that first line, applies the quantity clamp against that line's ordered quantity, and reports line 1 for every ASN row.
Fix
Luminous has a corrected 856 generation path that reads each line's shipped quantity and PO line number from the fulfillment records — the same authoritative source already used when a single shipment item covers multiple order lines. This path:
- Matches each shipment row to its own order line using the PO line key from the original 850.
- Reports the correct shipped quantity per line.
- Applies the existing quantity clamp against the correctly matched order line (not the first line).
- Handles orders where the stored 850 uses buyer part numbers as SKUs (matching by PO line key rather than SKU alone).
This fix is released behind a feature flag and is off by default. Contact Luminous support to have it enabled for your account.
How to request the fix
- Confirm your account uses EDI channels and regularly receives purchase orders with more than one line for the same SKU.
- Contact Luminous support and reference this issue. They'll turn on the corrected 856 line mapping for your account.
- After it's turned on, resend any recently rejected 856s from the sales order: ⋮ → Send EDI Documents → Send EDI 856. You can do this from Operations → Sales Orders, the Sales Order Grid, or the order detail page.
- To find failed documents in bulk, go to Insights → EDI Report (EDI Operations Dashboard), select the failed rows, and click Bulk Retry.
What stays the same
- Unique-SKU orders are completely unaffected by this change.
- Partial shipments (shipped quantity less than ordered) continue to report only what was shipped.
- The protection against kit-component quantity inflation (preventing the ASN from exceeding the 810 invoice quantity) remains active.
