Symptom

An EDI order has shipped in part, but no 856 (Advance Ship Notice) has gone to your trading partner. If you resend it manually, you see: “856 held: this order is not fully shipped. The 856 will send once every fulfillment order ships."

Why it happens

Your EDI integration account has Send 856 on Order Complete turned on. With this setting on, Luminous waits until every active fulfillment order on the sales order is Shipped, then sends one 856 covering all shipments. Resending manually does not bypass the hold.

The hold only applies to the 856 and only when this option is on. When the option is off, Luminous sends an 856 for each shipment as it is created.

How to resolve

  1. Open the sales order and check its fulfillment orders. Every active fulfillment order must reach Shipped. Ship or complete any that are still open or backordered.
  2. If you cancel a fulfillment order that will never ship, Luminous stops waiting for it. The remaining fulfillment orders can then complete the order. Only fulfillment orders with status cancelled are excluded from the wait. Check with support before relying on other statuses such as voided or failed.
  3. To send an 856 for each partial shipment instead, go to Settings → Integrations, click the edit (pencil) icon on your EDI account, and in the Settings section untick Send 856 on Order Complete. Click Save.
  4. Once the order is fully shipped, or after you change the setting, resend the 856 from the sales order. The nightly retry will also pick it up. After a successful send, the 856 appears in the EDI Report.

Note that if the cancelled-order EDI guard is active on your account, it blocks the 856 for a cancelled order or a cancelled fulfillment order tied to the shipment. See the related article.

When to contact support

  • Every fulfillment order shows Shipped and the 856 still has not gone out.
  • You cannot find the Send 856 on Order Complete option on your integration account.
  • You need an 856 for a partially shipped order that has a cancelled fulfillment order.
  • You expected the 945 to be held in the same way and need that confirmed.
