Why the error appears

When you change a SKU's Product Type to Non-Inventory — through the SKU edit form, a bulk update, or a product import — Luminous checks whether the SKU still holds active inventory state. Converting a SKU that has live transactions would leave those records in an inconsistent state (orphaned cost layers, inventory adjustments with no tracking context, etc.), so the system blocks the change and returns a validation error.

The error message names every blocking condition at once, so you can resolve them all in a single pass rather than discovering them one by one.

The four conditions that block a conversion

Blocking conditionWhat it meansHow to clear it
On-hand stockThe SKU has a positive on-hand quantity in at least one warehouse.Perform a manual inventory adjustment to zero the on-hand, or transfer and deplete the stock first. In Luminous go to Inventory → SKUs → [SKU], click Create Adjustment Entry, and post a negative adjustment equal to the current on-hand.
Open cost layersThe SKU has unconsumed cost-layer entries (received units whose cost has not yet been depleted by shipments).Ship the remaining units so layers are consumed FIFO, or use the Close the Books → Write off & mark non-inventory action, which handles the disposal and conversion in one guided step.
Open purchase ordersOne or more supplier POs reference this SKU and have not been fully received or cancelled.Go to Purchase Orders, filter by the SKU, and cancel or close any lines that are still open.
Open sales order linesAn active sales order contains this SKU as a line item that has not been shipped or cancelled.Go to Sales Orders, filter by the SKU, and cancel or mark as shipped the open lines before retrying the conversion.

Step-by-step resolution

  1. Read the error message — it lists every condition that is currently blocking the conversion.
  2. Resolve each listed condition using the steps in the table above.
  3. Re-save the SKU with the Non-Inventory type. The save will succeed once all conditions are clear.

Tip — use Close the Books: If you are writing off discontinued or zero-value stock, the Close the Books wizard includes a "Write off & mark non-inventory" composite action that posts the disposal adjustment, consumes the cost layers, and converts the SKU type atomically. It is the recommended path when both on-hand stock and open cost layers need to be cleared together.

What happens after a successful conversion

Once the SKU is saved as Non-Inventory, Luminous applies the full set of non-inventory rules automatically:

  • No inventory quantities are tracked (on-hand, pending, incoming, committed are all removed from scope).
  • The SKU is excluded from fulfillment orders and picklists.
  • No stock levels are pushed to connected channels — Shopify, EDI trading partners, and other integrations will no longer receive stock updates for this SKU.
  • The SKU cannot be added to Transfer Orders or assigned Lot Tracking.
