Before you read further: this validation is currently being rolled out gradually. For the large majority of tenants, the check described below runs in the background but does not block receiving — Luminous logs the situation internally without stopping you. If you attempted to receive against a transfer order with an unshipped source leg and it succeeded without this error, that is expected under the current rollout; the guard will only start blocking receipts once it's turned on for your account. This section describes what happens for tenants where the block is active, and applies to everyone once it's fully rolled out.
"Cannot receive against transfer order: its outgoing shipment has not been marked as shipped yet"
This message appears when you try to create a receiving report against a transfer order, but the sending warehouse has not yet marked the goods as shipped.
Why Luminous shows this
Every transfer order creates two linked documents:
- A sales order at the source (sending) warehouse — marking this as shipped removes the inventory from that location.
- A purchase order at the destination (receiving) warehouse — creating a receiving report against it adds the inventory to that location.
Both steps must happen in the right sequence. If the destination books stock before the source ships, inventory appears at the new location without being removed from the old one — a phantom stock increase that overstates your real on-hand.
Step-by-step fix
- Locate the linked sales order. Open the transfer order and find the associated sales order for the sending warehouse.
- Confirm goods have physically left the source. Only mark it as shipped when stock has actually departed.
- Mark the sales order as shipped. On the sales order, click Mark as Shipped. This debits inventory from the sending warehouse.
- Return to the receiving report. Once the sales order is in a shipped status, Luminous will allow the receiving report to be saved.
If you use "Auto Mark Sales Order as Shipped"
Transfer orders created with the Auto Mark Sales Order as Shipped checkbox enabled mark the linked sales order as shipped automatically when the transfer order is posted — you do not need to do it manually. If you still see this error, the auto-ship step may not have completed. Check the status of the linked sales order and mark it manually if needed.
