Overview

Luminous now supports a 2″ × 1″ paper size for Custom HTML packing slip templates. This is designed for standard thermal label stock (sometimes called a shipping or bin label). When you select this size:

  • Only the Header section of your template is used — it renders as the label face.
  • Item, footer, and items-header sections are hidden in the editor and are not included in the saved template.
  • High DPI is enabled automatically, so barcode images are generated at roughly 3× the density of the standard setting (~288 DPI instead of ~96 DPI). You do not need to enable it manually.
  • The label is scoped to Packing Slip template type only — it is not available on Invoice or other document templates.

Note: This feature requires your account to have the 2″ × 1″ label size enabled. Contact your Luminous account team if you do not see the option.

Creating the template

  1. Go to Manage → Templates and click Create (or edit an existing Custom HTML packing slip).
  2. Set Type to Packing Slip.
  3. Set Configuration Mode to Custom HTML.
  4. In the Page Size & Orientation dropdown, choose Label – 2″ × 1″.
    • If this option is not visible, it has not been enabled for your account yet.
  5. In the Header HTML field, write the HTML for your label face. Typical content:
    • A <barcode> placeholder to render a scannable barcode.
    • An order-number or SKU placeholder below the barcode.
    • Keep the layout compact — the rendered area is 2 inches wide by 1 inch tall.
  6. Item, footer, and items-header fields are optional at this size and will be cleared on save. You do not need to fill them in.
  7. Click Save.

Printing the label

There are two output paths for a 2″ × 1″ packing slip template:

OutputWhat is sentUses your HTML?
Export PDFYour Header HTML rendered at high resolution✅ Yes
Print / Download ZPLA fixed native thermal label: Code 128 barcode of the order number, with the order number printed below❌ No — the ZPL is a fixed layout

For barcode scanning in a pick-and-ship workflow, the ZPL path is typically faster (no PDF rendering step) and produces the crispest output on a native ZPL printer (e.g. Zebra). The PDF path gives you full control over the label face via your HTML.

High DPI for other page sizes

If your account also has the High DPI option enabled for Custom HTML packing slips, you will see a High DPI (for Printing) checkbox when editing a Custom HTML packing slip template at any page size. Checking it generates barcode images at higher resolution for the PDF export path.

When 2″ × 1″ is selected, High DPI is turned on automatically and you do not need to check it manually.

Testing your label

  1. Open any sales order and click Actions → Export Packing Slip, choosing your new template.
  2. In the PDF, zoom to 200% — barcode bars should be sharp, not pixelated.
  3. Print a copy on your thermal printer and scan it with your handheld scanner to confirm decode before rolling it out team-wide.

Limitations

  • The 2″ × 1″ size is only available on Packing Slip type templates in Custom HTML mode.
  • The ZPL output renders a fixed layout (order number barcode + number text). Luminous does not convert your Custom HTML into ZPL.
  • The item and footer HTML sections you may have authored are intentionally not saved when the 2″ × 1″ size is active. If you switch back to a standard page size, you will need to re-enter those sections.
  • Template type and configuration mode cannot be changed after a template is created. If you need a 2″ × 1″ label and have an existing Standard Options packing slip, create a new Custom HTML packing slip template.
