Why the setup button disappears after initial configuration
When barcode generation has not yet been configured, the UPC / Barcode field on a SKU shows a Set up UPC generation button. Clicking it opens the setup dialog.
Once generation has been configured, that button is replaced by a Generate button. Clicking Generate immediately assigns the next unused barcode — it does not re-open the settings dialog. There is no separate gear or settings icon on the UPC field itself.
This is expected behavior. To change your prefix, format, starting counter, or auto-assign toggle, use the dedicated settings page described below.
How to reconfigure UPC/barcode generation settings
Only admins can change these settings.
- Click your name in the top-right corner and choose Settings.
- In the Settings sidebar, click Fulfillment.
- Scroll to the EDI / GS1 section. You will see all UPC generation options:

| Item reference digits | Visible only when Custom format is selected. Sets how many digits follow your prefix. |
| Barcode / GTIN prefix | A shorter prefix used only for product barcodes. Leave blank to reuse the GS1 Company Prefix. |
| Next UPC item reference | The counter value for the next code to be assigned. Click Scan catalog to auto-detect the highest value already in use and advance past it. |
| Auto-assign UPC on create | When enabled, blank UPC fields are filled automatically whenever a new SKU is saved. |
- Make your changes. The capacity preview updates as you type, showing how many SKUs your prefix and format combination can support.
- Click Save Settings (top-right of the page) to apply.
Notes
- Changes saved here take effect immediately for all subsequent Generate clicks and auto-assignments.
- Switching formats mid-stream (for example, from UPC-A to Custom) does not reset the counter — new codes will follow the new format while the counter continues from where it left off. Review your existing catalog before switching formats.
- Non-admin users can still click Generate on a SKU to consume the next code; they cannot access or change the settings page.
