Overview

Luminous product custom fields — such as MasterSku, StyleName, or any fields your team has configured — can be bulk-populated automatically when you create products using the Unified Importer. The importer reads every custom field that exists on your account and adds it as a ready-to-fill column in the download template, so you never have to enter values one product at a time after import.

How the Unified Importer handles product custom fields

When you download the import template inside the Unified Importer, Luminous checks which product custom fields are active on your account and appends one column for each field. The column name follows the pattern:

CUSTOM_<YourFieldLabel>

Examples:

  • CUSTOM_MasterSku
  • CUSTOM_StyleName
  • CUSTOM_Season

Columns for dropdown and multi-dropdown custom fields will only accept the pre-configured option values. Columns for text, number, and date fields accept free-form entries (dates must be in YYYY-MM-DD format).

During import, the system reads each CUSTOM_ column, matches it to the correct custom field by label, and saves the value directly on the newly created product — no manual follow-up needed.

Step-by-step: populate custom fields via the Unified Importer

  1. Open the importer — Go to Tools → Imports and click Luminous Unified Importer (in the Product Catalog section).
  2. Download the template — Click the download button to get the latest Excel template. Your custom field columns (CUSTOM_MasterSku, etc.) will already be present.
  3. Fill in your data — Complete the required product columns (SKU, Product Name, Category, etc.) and then fill in the CUSTOM_ columns for each row that needs a value. You can leave a custom field cell blank if no value is needed for that product.
  4. Upload and map — Drop the completed file into the importer. Review the auto-mapped columns and click Apply Mapping.
  5. Review the preview — Confirm products, variants, and any detected errors. Fix errors in your file and restart if needed (the importer will not run with outstanding errors).
  6. Execute the import — Click Execute Import. Custom field values are written to each product as it is created.
  7. Verify — Open a newly imported product and confirm the custom field values appear correctly.

Tip: If a custom field column is missing from the template, check that the field is active under Manage → Custom Fields (Product object type). The template is generated dynamically, so any field you add will appear the next time you download a fresh template.

Important: Shopify metafield mapping is for order custom fields, not product custom fields

Luminous does support mapping Shopify order metafields to Luminous sales order custom fields (configured on a channel's pull-orders integration). However, there is no equivalent configuration that maps Shopify product metafields to Luminous product custom fields at sync time.

If your product data originates in Shopify and you need custom fields populated at creation, the recommended workflow is:

  1. Export your Shopify product catalog.
  2. Run it through the Shopify Product Scrubber to convert it to a Luminous-ready format.
  3. Add your custom field values to the CUSTOM_ columns in the scrubbed file.
  4. Import the file through the Unified Importer as described above.
