Why the system refuses to mark a cancelled order as shipped

Luminous will not mark a sales order as shipped if either of the following is true:

  • The sales order itself is cancelled at the source (e.g. the originating channel cancelled it).
  • Every fulfillment order attached to the sales order that could still ship has a cancelled, voided, failed, or trashed status. (Fulfillment orders that are already shipped are excluded from this check — they are done, not blocked.)

This guard applies whether you mark one order shipped individually or use the bulk select-all action.

What the message means

When the system refuses, you will see a message similar to:

This sales order cannot be marked as shipped because it is cancelled, or every fulfillment order on it that could still ship is cancelled. Open the linked sales order to check its fulfillment order status.

For a bulk operation that included multiple cancelled orders, the notification will list the affected order numbers and explain that those specific orders were not shipped.

How to investigate

  1. Open the sales order flagged in the message.
  2. Check the Fulfillment Orders tab. Look for fulfillment orders with a Cancelled, Voided, Failed, or Trash status.
  3. If one or more fulfillment orders are cancelled, verify whether the underlying channel order was also cancelled — channel cancellations are the most common source.
  4. If the cancellation was in error, you may need to reopen or recreate the fulfillment order before marking the sales order shipped.

Why this matters

Preventing shipment creation on cancelled orders keeps your inventory counts, automation rules, and activity logs clean. Allowing a cancelled order to proceed through the shipping flow could incorrectly deduct inventory, trigger reorder automations, and add misleading entries to the order history.

Bulk operations

When you use Select All → Mark as Shipped, any cancelled orders in the selection are silently skipped (no shipment or inventory change occurs for them) and the job notification will list the order numbers that were refused with the reason. All non-cancelled orders in the same selection ship normally.
