Kits are virtual products — they don't hold their own stock
In Luminous, a kit (sometimes called a bundle) is a virtual product made up of two or more component SKUs. Because a kit has no physical stock of its own, Luminous intentionally prevents you from adding or adjusting inventory directly on a kit SKU.
On the product detail page for a kit SKU you will notice:
- The Create Adjustment Entry button is not available.
- The Qty Logs and Costs tabs are hidden.
These controls are only available on regular (non-kit) product SKUs. This is by design — the kit's inventory is always derived from its components, never set independently.
How kit inventory is calculated automatically
Luminous continuously recalculates and displays kit inventory based on the stock levels of every component SKU in the kit. The rule is:
Kit available quantity = the lowest number of complete kits that can be assembled from each component's available stock.
Example
| Component | On Hand | Pending | Available | Qty per Kit | Kits possible |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Widget A | 20 | 2 | 18 | 2 | 9 |
| Widget B | 10 | 1 | 9 | 1 | 9 |
| Widget C | 5 | 0 | 5 | 1 | 5 |
Widget C is the limiting component, so the kit shows 5 available — even though widgets A and B have more stock.
What drives the numbers on the kit SKU page
| Quantity shown | How it's derived |
|---|---|
| On Hand | Minimum whole kits assemblable from each component's (on-hand − pending) |
| Incoming | Minimum whole kits possible from each component's incoming (in-transit / PO) quantity |
| Available | Same as On Hand (the bottleneck component wins) |
This recalculation runs automatically in the background whenever component stock changes.
How to increase kit inventory
Because kit stock is derived from its components, the only way to increase a kit's available quantity is to add inventory to the component SKUs.
- Receive a purchase order for the component SKUs.
- Create an inventory adjustment on a component SKU (go to that component's product page and use Create Adjustment Entry).
- Complete an inbound shipment that includes the component SKUs.
Once component quantities rise, the kit's available count will update automatically.
What happens when a kit is sold
When an order containing a kit is fulfilled, Luminous automatically:
- Expands the kit into its component SKUs.
- Deducts the required quantity of each component from stock.
- Leaves the kit SKU itself unchanged (because it carries no stock).
This keeps your component-level inventory accurate for reordering and COGS tracking.
Optional settings that affect kit availability
Assembly / Disassembly quantities
If your account has the Include Assembly Qty or Include Disassembly Qty settings enabled, in-progress assembly orders or recoverable disassembly quantities for component SKUs can be counted toward kit availability. Contact your account administrator or Luminous support to review these settings.
Combine Warehouse Group Inventory for Kits
This per-warehouse-group toggle controls whether kit availability pools component stock across all warehouses in a group (Toggle ON) or calculates it separately per warehouse (Toggle OFF). See the related article for full details.
Summary
| ✅ You can | ❌ You cannot |
|---|---|
| View kit available/on-hand/incoming quantities | Add or adjust inventory directly on a kit SKU |
| Receive inventory on component SKUs to raise kit stock | Create a manual inventory entry for a kit |
| Sell kits — components are deducted automatically | View Qty Logs or Cost Layers on a kit SKU |
| Pre-assemble using a BOM + Assembly workflow for a finished-good SKU that holds its own stock | Make a kit appear in the Inventory Valuation report |
If you need a product that carries its own physical inventory (e.g., a pre-built gift box), you should create a finished-good SKU and use the BOM + Assembly workflow instead of the kit feature.
