When you add an extra cost line on a receiving report, the Cost Allocation column is filled in for you, and you can change it to Unit, Volume, Weight or Value based allocation. A line can still end up with no method — for example a cost carried over from a purchase order, an import, or the API. Those blank lines now use your account default.
What happens to a blank line
- Luminous uses the Cost Allocation Type set in Settings > Inventory. If that is Value-Based, a blank line is allocated by value.
- If the account has no global setting, a blank line is allocated by units.
- Previously, a blank line was always allocated by units, whatever the global setting said.
Lines that are not blank
- If you choose a method on a line (units, value, weight or volume), that choice always wins over the global setting.
- Costs carried from a purchase order onto a receiving report also take the global setting when their method is blank.
How to check or change it
- Go to Settings > Inventory and find Cost Allocation Type under Costing.
- To use a different method for a single cost, change Cost Allocation on that line in the receiving report’s Extra Costs section.
Rollout note This behavior is controlled by a feature flag. If blank lines on your account still allocate by units, contact support to have it enabled.
