Overview

When you create or edit an Assembly Order, Luminous needs to know which storage locations (and lots) to pull each BOM component from. The Auto Split checkbox controls how that assignment is made. It is enabled by default on every new Assembly Order.

What Auto Split does

Auto Split ON (default)

When you select a BOM, set a Warehouse Group, and enter a Planned Quantity, Luminous looks at every storage location in that warehouse group that holds the required component. It then:

  1. Sorts the available locations by lot expiry date (earliest-expiring stock first, following FEFO order).
  2. Creates one line item per location, consuming as much of each location's available quantity as needed until the full planned quantity is satisfied.
  3. If a location has less stock than needed, its entire available balance is used and Luminous moves on to the next location.
  4. If total stock across all locations still falls short, the remaining quantity is added on to the last line.
  5. If no location has any stock at all, Luminous creates a single unassigned line so you can fill in the location manually.

The result is that one BOM component can appear as multiple lines in the order, each pointing to a different location and/or lot.

Auto Split OFF

Luminous instead picks the single location with the largest available quantity for each component and assigns the full planned quantity to that one line — regardless of whether that location actually has enough stock to cover it.

How recomposition works

Any time you change the Planned Quantity, Warehouse Group, or BOM on an open order, Luminous automatically recomposes the BOM component lines. Whether those lines are split across locations depends on the current state of the Auto Split toggle.

  • Draft orders with Auto Split ON — when you reopen the form, Luminous recomposes lines from current inventory so lot and location assignments stay up to date.
  • Non-Draft orders, or Draft orders with Auto Split OFF — the saved lines are preserved exactly as they were last saved.

Recompose from Current Inventory button

When editing an existing Assembly Order, a Recompose from Current Inventory button appears next to the Auto Split checkbox. Clicking it forces a fresh split based on current stock — useful if inventory positions have changed since the order was created and you want updated location/lot assignments without having to toggle the checkbox.

When to use each setting

SituationRecommended setting
You track lots and want FEFO depletion across multiple locationsAuto Split ON
Components span several bins/locations and you want each picked from the right placeAuto Split ON
All stock for a component is in one location and you prefer a single clean lineAuto Split OFF
You want to assign locations manually without the system pre-filling themAuto Split OFF

For most lot-tracked operations, leaving Auto Split enabled is recommended because it mirrors the FEFO rotation logic and pre-fills the correct pick locations for your warehouse team.

Tips

  • Toggling Auto Split after lines are already on the form immediately triggers a recomposition — your existing line assignments will be replaced.
  • The Recompose from Current Inventory button is the safest way to refresh an existing order without changing any other settings.
  • If a component shows a single unassigned line even with Auto Split ON, it means no stock was found in the selected Warehouse Group for that SKU. Receive or transfer stock first, then recompose.
