Short answer: yes — each split fulfillment order ships independently and gets its own tracking number
When Luminous splits a sales order into multiple fulfillment orders by Estimated Ship Date, each resulting fulfillment order is a fully independent shipping record. Because labels are printed per fulfillment order, each one receives its own carrier tracking number at the time of label creation.
How the split works
If your channel is configured to Split By: Estimated Ship Date, Luminous groups order items during auto-generation:
| Items on the sales order | What Luminous creates |
|---|---|
| Item A & B — ship Jan 15 | Fulfillment Order 1 (Ship By Jan 15) |
| Item C — ship Jan 20 | Fulfillment Order 2 (Ship By Jan 20) |
| Item D — no date | Fulfillment Order 3 (Ship By: today) |
Each group becomes its own fulfillment order with its own Ship By Date. See How does order allocation work for sales channel orders with future ship dates? for full details on the splitting and Ship By Date logic.
What happens when labels are printed
Because each split fulfillment order is a separate record, label printing works independently for each one:
- Your warehouse staff prints a label for each fulfillment order — either from the fulfillment order detail page, via the scan-to-print workflow, or through a batch print.
- Luminous requests a label from the carrier for that specific fulfillment order (using the items, weight, dimensions, and ship-from/ship-to addresses associated with that FO).
- The carrier returns a unique tracking number, which Luminous stores against that fulfillment order and marks it as Shipped.
The result: a single sales order with three date-based splits will produce three separate tracking numbers — one per fulfillment order.
What your customer sees
- If you push tracking information back to your sales channel (e.g. Shopify), each tracking number is associated with the items in that particular fulfillment order.
- Your customer may receive multiple shipment notifications, one per fulfillment order, each with its own tracking link.
- This is expected behavior and ensures customers can track each portion of their order on its own timeline.
Multi-parcel shipments within a single fulfillment order
Note that within a single fulfillment order, you can also print multiple parcel labels (multi-piece shipments). In that case:
- Each parcel within the FO gets its own label and tracking number.
- For carriers like FedEx or UPS, a master tracking number may also be generated that groups all parcels in that shipment.
- This is separate from the date-based FO split — it applies to the physical packaging of one fulfillment order's items.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Will a voided label on one split FO affect the others? No. Voiding a label cancels it only for the fulfillment order it belongs to. The other fulfillment orders and their tracking numbers are unaffected.
Q: What if I need to reprint a label? Reprint from the individual fulfillment order. Luminous will return the cached label (valid for 24 hours after printing) if the same parameters are used, or request a new one from the carrier if the original has expired or been voided.
Q: Can I print all the split FO labels at once? Yes — use the batch label print feature to queue labels for multiple fulfillment orders simultaneously. Each still receives its own tracking number.
Q: How do I enable split-by-estimated-ship-date? Go to Manage → Channels, open the relevant channel, and set the Split auto created fulfillment orders by option to Estimated Ship Date. Contact Luminous support if the option is not visible — this requires the Channel Types feature to be enabled on your account.
