What a kit is

A kit (also called a bundle) is a product type that groups two or more existing component SKUs and sells them as one item. A kit holds no stock of its own. Luminous calculates how many kits are available from the stock of its components, and the component that runs out first sets the limit.

For example, if a kit needs 2 × Widget A and 1 × Widget B, and you have 6 Widget A and 15 Widget B, the kit shows 3 available.

On the kit’s SKU page you’ll notice:

  • There’s no Qty Logs or Costs tab. To see stock movements, open the component SKUs.
  • You can’t create an adjustment entry for the kit. Adjust the components instead.
  • The kit’s incoming figure comes from its components.

Purchasing a kit

You can search for a kit on a purchase order. Luminous converts it into its component lines for you.

  1. Go to Inventory → Purchase Orders and click Create Purchase Order.
  2. Choose a supplier and go to Add Purchase Order Items.
  3. In Search SKUs to add…, select the kit.
  4. In the Kit Components dialog, enter the Kit Quantity. Each component’s quantity updates automatically (kit quantity × quantity per kit), and you can adjust it before adding.
  5. Click Add Kit Components.

The PO now has one line per component SKU. The kit itself does not appear as a line.

Receiving a kit

Because the PO holds component lines, you receive them like any other product. Each component’s on-hand stock goes up, and the kit’s available quantity updates automatically. There is no separate step to break a kit down on receiving.

If a kit line reaches a purchase order another way, such as through an integration or the API, receiving it adds stock to each component. The amount is the received kit quantity × each component’s quantity per kit. No stock is added to the kit itself.

Converting an existing SKU into a kit

  • You can’t change the Product Type of an existing SKU. The Product Type field is disabled when you edit a saved SKU. This keeps the SKU’s transactions, cost layers and integration links consistent.
  • Option 1: create a new Kit SKU.
    1. Go to Inventory → SKUs and click Create.
    2. Set Product Type to Kit.
    3. Enter the Product Name and Internal SKU.
    4. On the Kit Items tab, add each component SKU and its quantity per kit.
    5. Click Save.
  • Option 2: Bulk-create kits Go to Tools → Imports → Product Catalog → Kits. Click Download Kits Template, fill it in, then upload it and follow the steps (Map Columns → Preview → Import). The component SKUs must already exist.

If you have many existing SKUs to convert, contact Luminous Support.

Picking kit components separately in fulfillment

If your warehouse or 3PL needs each component listed separately:

  1. Go to Manage → Channels and click Edit on the channel.
  2. Under Fulfillment Settings, turn on Expand Kits for Fulfillment.
  3. Click Save.

If you need stock held on the kit itself

For a pre-built item that holds its own stock, such as a packed gift box, use a finished-good SKU with a bill of materials and an Assembly Order. To break a finished product back into components, create an Assembly Order with the Order Type Disassembly.
