Building Automations with the Visual Workflow Builder
The Workflow Builder is a point-and-click canvas embedded in Luminous. It lets you assemble a trigger, conditions, and actions without writing or knowing any JSON.
Opening the builder
- Go to Tools → Automation.
- To create a new rule, click Create Rule — the Workflow Builder opens directly (for an existing rule, click its three-dot menu and choose Edit in Workflow Builder).
Creating a new rule
- The canvas opens with a default Order Created trigger. Set your trigger first (Event Trigger in the Trigger Settings panel) — this is the event that kicks the rule off (e.g. Order Created, Order Updated, Daily).
- Add one or more conditions. All conditions must pass for the rule's actions to run.
- Add one or more actions in the order you want them to execute.
- Enter a descriptive name in the Workflow Name field of the Trigger Settings panel, then click Save Changes.
- The rule is saved and the URL updates to reflect its new ID.
Editing an existing rule
- On the Automation list, click the rule's three-dot menu and choose Edit in Workflow Builder.
- The canvas loads the rule's current trigger, conditions, and actions automatically.
- Make your changes and click Save Changes.
Renaming a rule from the builder page
Click the rule name in the page header to edit it inline. The new name is saved immediately — no need to open the canvas.
Tips
- You can switch between the Workflow Builder and the classic form — both save to the same backend rule.
- If you want to test the rule on existing orders without waiting for the event to fire, see How to Manually Trigger Automations for Orders.
- If you want AI to draft the rule for you first, see How do I generate an automation rule using AI?
