Overview

An EDI 846 (Inventory Advice) document tells your trading partner—retailers like Target, Walmart, or others—what sellable inventory you currently have on hand. Luminous generates and transmits 846 files automatically on a configurable schedule through your EDI integration account (typically connected to SPS Commerce as the EDI network provider). This guide walks through the full setup from creating the integration account to enabling a daily push schedule.

Prerequisites

Before configuring the channel, you need an EDI App Integration Account in Luminous that stores your EDI network credentials (Vendor ID and Partnership ID). These values are provided by your EDI network provider (e.g., SPS Commerce) and your trading partner during the EDI trading-partner setup process.

If the EDI integration account does not yet exist:

  1. Click your name (top right) and go to Settings / Integrations.
  2. Click Add Integration and choose EDI trading partner.
  3. Enter your Vendor ID and Partnership ID (from SPS Commerce / your trading partner's EDI setup).
  4. Save the account.

Step 1 — Create or Open the Channel

  1. Go to Manage → Channels.
  2. Either click Create or find an existing Sales or End-to-End channel for this trading partner and select Edit from its ⋮ menu.

The 846 stock push is available on Sales and End-to-End channel types. Fulfillment-only channels do not support stock push.

Step 2 — Enable Push Stock to Integration

  1. In the channel edit form, scroll to the Push Inventory Stocks and Costs section.
  2. Toggle Push Stock to Integration to ON.
  3. Optional settings that appear after enabling:
    • Include Incoming Stocks as Sellable — counts stock in transit as sellable when computing the quantity sent in the 846.
    • Push Incoming Stocks from Supplier Purchase Orders — includes open supplier PO quantities in the sellable figure.
    • Advanced configuration — expand to fine-tune exactly which stock components are added or deducted from the sellable quantity.

Step 3 — Select the EDI Integration Account

  1. Under Push To Integration Account, open the dropdown and choose the EDI account you set up in the Prerequisites step.
  2. For Sales channels, a Warehouse Group picker also appears—select the warehouse group whose stock should be used when calculating the 846 quantities.

Step 4 — Configure a Daily Push Schedule

Once an integration account is selected, the Enable Scheduled Push Stock section becomes available.

  1. Toggle Enable Scheduled Push Stock to ON.

  2. Choose a Mode (Daily or Hourly; for Daily, pick a Daily Variant of Set Times or Spread):

    ModeHow it works
Daily – Set TimesEnter one or more specific times in HH:MM (24-hour UTC) format. Luminous will push at each listed time. For a single daily 846, enter one time (e.g., 06:00).
Daily – SpreadEnter how many pushes per day and a start time. Luminous distributes them evenly across the day. Use this if your trading partner requires multiple daily updates.
HourlyEnter an interval (e.g., 1 for every hour). Use this only if the partner requires more frequent updates than daily.
  3. A Next runs (UTC) preview is shown—verify it matches your intended schedule before saving.

Default without a schedule: If you do not enable a scheduled push, Luminous falls back to a shared legacy cadence (approximately hourly). Enable the schedule to control the exact timing.

Step 5 — Save and Verify

  1. Click Save at the bottom of the channel form.
  2. After the first scheduled push fires, confirm delivery using the EDI Documents Report (under Reports):
    • In the All EDI Transactions table, filter by Document Type = 846 and Outgoing.
    • Confirm a row appears with transaction_status = success.
    • If a row shows failed, check the transaction_response field for the error detail from SPS Commerce, and verify your Vendor ID and Partnership ID are correct on the integration account.

What Gets Sent in the 846

Each 846 document includes, for every product on the channel:

  • SKU, UPC, and GTIN identifiers
  • Sellable available quantity (computed using the channel's stock push formula and any configured buffers)
  • Per-warehouse breakdown of available quantities

The file is transmitted to SPS Commerce (or your configured EDI VAN) using the credentials stored on the EDI integration account; SPS Commerce then routes it to your trading partner.
