Receiving components against a multi-recipe SKU

Some finished goods can be built from more than one recipe — for example, a ring sold in both 14k and 18k gold, or a food product with a recipe per production season. Luminous calls each recipe a Bill of Materials (BOM). When you receive components for one of these SKUs, you must tell the system which recipe arrived on this shipment.

Step-by-step

  1. Open or create a Receiving Report (Inventory → Receiving).
  2. Add the purchase order line for the finished-goods SKU.
  3. Click the three-dots menu(beside the line total) to switch the line to Receive as Components.
  4. If the SKU has more than one BOM, a BOM dropdown appears above the component table. Select the recipe that matches the shipment (for example, "14k" or "18k").
    • The component table is hidden until you make a selection — this prevents the components from different recipes from being mixed together.
  5. Once a recipe is chosen, the component rows for that recipe appear. Enter the quantity received for each component.
  6. If you change your mind, select a different recipe from the same dropdown. The component table resets to the new recipe's rows.
  7. Finish filling in the remaining header fields (date, tracking number, location) and click Submit.

Single-BOM SKUs

If the SKU has only one recipe assigned, the BOM dropdown is not shown. The single recipe is selected automatically and the workflow is unchanged.

Why only one recipe per shipment?

Each shipment contains components for exactly one recipe. Mixing components from two recipes into the same receipt has no single correct answer: the finished-unit count depends on which components were actually received. Luminous enforces the one-recipe-per-receipt rule at save time — if components from a different recipe are submitted, the report will be rejected with a clear error message.
