Printing and downloading sales documents
Luminous lets you send invoices, estimates, return orders, and credit memos straight to your printer — or save them as PDFs — without leaving the page.
Invoices and estimates
From the invoice edit or view page:
- Open the invoice or estimate (the document must already be saved — the buttons appear once a record exists).
- On the edit page header you will see two buttons: Print and Download PDF. On the view page, open the ⋮ menu (top-right) and choose Print Invoice or Export Invoice to PDF.
- Print — fetches the PDF and opens your browser's print dialog immediately.
- Download PDF — saves the file to your downloads folder.
- If the invoice is an estimate the button labels update to Print Estimate / Download Estimate PDF automatically.
Tip: When you save a brand-new invoice, Luminous lands you on the document view page where these actions are already waiting in the ⋮ menu — no need to hunt the row down in the grid.
From the invoice list (grid):
- Find the invoice row and open the row action menu (the three-dot or dropdown button on the right).
- Choose Print to open the print dialog, or Export to PDF to download.
- If your account has more than one invoice template, a template picker appears first — select the layout you want, then the action proceeds.
Return orders
- Open the return order detail page (navigate to the return from its parent sales order).
- In the top-right corner of the page, click Print or Download PDF.
Credit memos
- Go to the client profile and open the Credit Memos tab.
- In the action menu for any credit memo row, choose Print or Download PDF.
- Both actions are available regardless of the credit memo's status (active, partially applied, or fully applied).
Browser compatibility note
Most modern desktop browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) open a print dialog automatically. Safari and iOS do not support programmatic print dialogs — on those browsers Luminous downloads the PDF instead and shows a brief notice explaining what happened.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Print / Download PDF buttons are greyed out or not visible on the invoice edit page | The invoice has not been saved yet. Save it first; the buttons appear once the record exists. |
| Error message on export | Your account may not have a default invoice PDF template configured. Go to Manage → Templates and ensure an invoice PDF template is set as the default. |
| PDF downloads instead of printing | You are likely on Safari or iOS — this is expected behavior. |
