Overview

The Default Starting Location is set on the SKU you are building (the finished good). When Auto Split runs on an Assembly Order for that SKU, each component is taken from this location first. This suits teams that work department by department, where each department has its own bin.

Set it on one SKU

  1. Open the finished-good SKU.
  2. Click the ⋮ menu at the top right and choose Edit SKU.
  3. In the Update SKU window, find Default Starting Location, below Default Receiving Bin and Default Assembly Bin.
  4. Pick a location (shown as Warehouse – Bin), or clear the field to remove it, then save.

Note: Default Starting Location doesn’t appear on the SKU’s Details tab. Open Edit SKU to see the current value.

Set it in bulk

  1. Add a DEFAULT_STARTING_LOCATION column to your Master SKU import file. It is also in the import template.
  2. Enter the bin as BIN or WAREHOUSE > BIN. Use the qualified form if the same bin name exists in more than one warehouse.
  3. An unknown or ambiguous bin is rejected with a row error. A blank cell keeps the SKU's current value.

How Auto Split uses it

  • Each component is taken from the starting location first.
  • If it has too little stock, the remainder is taken from other bins in the same warehouse, starting with the one holding the most on hand. Then it uses the group's other warehouses.
  • If the starting location holds none of a component, that component goes to the location with the most stock.
  • Lot-tracked components keep first-expiring-first-out order, so the starting location is ignored for them.
  • If the field is empty, or the bin is outside the warehouse group, behavior is unchanged.

Deleting bins

You cannot delete a bin (or a warehouse containing it) while any SKU uses it as a default starting location. Change those SKUs first.
