The problem this solves

When you post an inventory adjustment today for an event that happened in a prior month — a missed count, a shrinkage correction, a cycle-count discrepancy — the adjustment has historically been recorded with today's date. That means it shows up in this month's stock snapshot and COGS reports, not last month's, making prior-period reconciliation difficult.

How to back-date an adjustment

When creating a manual adjustment, set the Business Date (also labeled Effective Date on some screens) to the date the inventory event actually occurred. Note: the Inventory → Adjustment Entries screen in the web app does not currently show this field. Contact Luminous Support if you need to back-date an adjustment.

  • When a business date is supplied, Luminous stamps the adjustment's ledger row with that date. The stock snapshot, COGS drilldowns, and adjustment reports all read the ledger row date — so the adjustment will appear in the period matching the business date you entered.
  • When no business date is supplied, the adjustment behaves exactly as before: it is recorded as of the time you post it.

What if I posted an adjustment with the wrong date?

The business date field is set at creation only. You cannot change it on an existing adjustment by editing the header.

To correct a wrong date:

  1. Delete the existing adjustment (the Inventory → Adjustment Entries list has no Delete action, so contact Luminous Support to remove it).
  2. Re-post the adjustment with the correct business date.

Deleting and re-posting reverses the original ledger entries and creates new ones under the correct date, keeping the stock total consistent.

Note: If period locking is enabled for your account, you cannot delete or re-post an adjustment dated inside a closed period without contacting Luminous Support. Check the current close line in the Close the Books wizard before attempting a correction.

Confirming the adjustment landed in the right period

After posting, go to Insights → Accounting → Stock Snapshot and set your date range to the period containing the business date you used. Open the Adjustments drilldown for the affected SKU — the adjustment should appear there with the business date as its posted date.
