Creating a Non-Inventory SKU
Non-Inventory is one of Luminous's three built-in product types (alongside Product and Kit). It is designed for goods or services that are never physically stocked — freight charges, consulting fees, shipping insurance, digital files, discount lines, and similar items.
As of September 2026, the Non-Inventory type is available on all accounts without any special setup.
Steps
- Go to Inventory → SKUs and click Create (or edit an existing SKU).
- On the Product Information tab, find the Product Type dropdown.
- Select NON-INVENTORY.
- Fill in the product name, internal SKU, and any pricing fields you need.
- Save the SKU.

Changing an existing SKU to Non-Inventory
Luminous prevents the type change if the SKU still has active on-hand stock, open orders, or other inventory-tracked quantities. Clear those first, then change the type. If you see an error during the conversion, see the related article: Why am I getting an error when I try to change a SKU's type to Non-Inventory?
Common use cases
- Freight or shipping charges bundled on a supplier PO
- Shipping protection / insurance fees
- Handling, customs, or duty charges
- Consulting or manufacturing labor (no physical output)
- Digital products or software licenses
- Coupon or discount lines on a sales order
