Cascading shared fields from a master SKU to its variants
Luminous can push a master SKU's pricing and shipping dimensions to all of its active variant SKUs in one step. There are two ways to do this: a manual action (on demand) and an automatic cascade on save (always-on per account).
Note: This feature must be enabled for your account by Luminous support before either mode is available.
What fields are cascaded?
Only a fixed set of shared attributes propagates from the master to its variants:

Fields that are never touched by a cascade include the SKU code, UPC/barcode, reorder levels, and any other field that is intentionally unique per variant.
Option 1 — Manual cascade (on demand)
- Go to Inventory → SKUs and open the master SKU's detail page.
- Look for the Cascade to variants action (available on master SKUs only).
- Confirm the action. Luminous will write the master's current values for all six fields to every active, non-discontinued variant under that master.
Use this when you want a one-time sync — for example, after a price update or after correcting a shipping weight.
Option 2 — Auto-cascade on save (account setting)
When this setting is enabled, Luminous automatically cascades to variants every time you save a master SKU and at least one of the six whitelisted fields actually changed value.
Important behavior details:
- If you save the master but only changed a description or a non-price field, no cascade runs — variant prices and dimensions are left untouched.
- The cascade is triggered only when saving a master SKU. Saving a variant SKU never cascades to its siblings.
To enable auto-cascade, go to Settings → Inventory, find the "Master SKU Settings" section, and turn on "Automatically cascade Master SKU changes to variants on save." (If you don't see this section at all, the underlying feature hasn't been enabled for your account yet — contact Luminous support.)
Which variants are updated?
The cascade targets active, non-discontinued variant SKUs under the master. Discontinued variants are skipped and must be updated manually if needed.
Will this affect inventory quantities or stock?
No. The cascade is strictly a data update to the six price/dimension fields. It does not move, zero, or adjust any inventory quantities, including for variants that mirror stock from the master.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cascade from a variant SKU to its siblings? No. The cascade always originates from a master SKU. Opening a variant SKU's page will not show the cascade action.
What if I want a variant to have a different price than the master? Update the variant's price directly after running the cascade, or avoid running the cascade for that master. Auto-cascade only fires when a whitelisted field on the master changes, so routine saves that don't touch price or dimensions won't overwrite a variant you customized.
Will this push the new values to Shopify or other channels? The cascade updates Luminous's product catalog records. Whether those changes propagate to a connected sales channel depends on your channel sync settings (e.g. a Shopify Sync Update).
