Why assign a template to a SKU?
Pinning a Grid Template to a master SKU means Luminous will automatically pre-select that template whenever a buyer adds that SKU's variants using the "Add variant distribution" dialog on a purchase order. Buyers can still override the template at the time of ordering.
Steps
- Open the master SKU record. (This must be the parent — the Variants tab is hidden on variant children.)
- Go to the Variants tab.
- Make sure This product has variations is checked. The Fixed variant distribution preset dropdown only appears when this box is on.
- Choose a preset from the Fixed variant distribution preset dropdown. Only templates whose axes all exist on this SKU's variant configuration are listed.
- The assignment saves immediately — you will see a snackbar confirming "Variant distribution preset assigned." You do not need to click the main SKU Save button.
To remove the assignment, choose — None — at the top of the dropdown. You will see "Variant distribution preset removed."
Why is the dropdown missing or empty?
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| Variants tab is hidden | You are on a variant child, not the master. Open the master SKU. |
| Dropdown does not appear | "This product has variations" checkbox is off. Enable it first. |
| SKU not saved yet | On a new SKU the pick is held and applied when you save the SKU (the hint reads "Applied when this SKU is saved."). |
| Dropdown appears but is empty | Either no Grid Templates have been created yet (go to Inventory → Inventory Admin → Variant Distribution Presets), or none of the existing templates match this SKU's variant axes. Check that the template's axis names match the SKU's variant type names (case-insensitive). |
| Feature is unavailable entirely | The Grid Templates feature flag is off for your account. Contact your Luminous administrator. |
