Scenario: ship-complete hold when partial fulfillment is disabled
If your account's Smart Fulfillment Settings is configured to disallow partial order fulfillment, Luminous will hold the entire order rather than ship the lines that are in stock while other lines remain short.
You will see the order remain without fulfillment orders and the system will record the reason:
Order held: partial fulfillment is not allowed and one or more items have insufficient stock
This behaviour is the same for:
- Standard order lines (grouped fulfillment)
- Lines configured for individual-unit fulfillment
How the hold works
When auto-generation runs, Luminous checks whether every line on the order can be fully covered across your priority lists. If even one line is short and partial fulfillment is not allowed, no fulfillment orders are created. The order sits and waits until enough stock arrives to cover all lines at once.
Once all lines are coverable (for example, after a purchase order is received), the next auto-generation run will release the entire order as one or more fulfillment orders without any manual action.
How partial fulfillment is controlled
The setting is resolved in this priority order:
- Per-order flag — set by the Allocation Planner's Ship Complete toggle, a business account rule, or the purchase-to-order planner.
- Tenant default — the Allow partial order fulfillment toggle in Smart Fulfillment settings.
If neither is explicitly set for an order, the system holds the entire order rather than shipping partially. Out of the box, partial fulfillment is off — you must explicitly enable it (per order or as your tenant default) if you want in‑stock lines to ship while others are on backorder.
What to do
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| You want the in-stock lines to ship now | Open the order in the Allocation Planner, turn Ship Complete off, and confirm the plan. This enables partial release for this order only. |
| The order should wait for full coverage | No action needed — fulfillment orders will auto-generate once all lines can be covered. |
| You believe all lines have sufficient stock | Check the shortage detail on the order (the held order's shortage rows show real per-warehouse availability). Confirm stock numbers are correct and that the right warehouse priority list is active for all SKUs. |
| You want to change the tenant default | Go to Operations → Operations Admin → Smart Fulfillment Settings and update the Allow partial order fulfillment toggle. Note this only affects new auto-generation runs, not orders already held. |
