Overview

When a Shopify order is fulfilled through Amazon's Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) service via Trackstar, Amazon sends an initial shipment update before real tracking information is available. Luminous now automatically discards these incomplete MCF shipment updates instead of processing them — preventing fulfillment errors and broken tracking records on Shopify.

This change affects all orders where the order is an MCF order and the shipment is marked as shipped but has no tracking number yet.

Background: Why This Matters

Amazon MCF fulfillments arrive in two stages via Trackstar:

  1. A placeholder update — the order is marked shipped, but tracking is not yet available.
  2. A real shipment update — sent shortly after, with actual tracking data.

Without this safeguard, the placeholder could be pushed to Shopify before tracking was ready. This would cause the order to appear as "Fulfilled" in Shopify with no tracking number — and when the real tracking arrived, Shopify would reject the update because the fulfillment slot was already used up.

Luminous now holds the push until real tracking is available, so customers receive one accurate, complete fulfillment notification.

How It Works

No action is required on your end. The logic runs automatically in the background for all MCF orders fulfilled through Trackstar.

  1. Trackstar sends an MCF shipment update to Luminous.
  2. Luminous checks whether the shipment is marked as shipped but has no tracking number.
  3. If tracking is missing — the update is discarded. Nothing is pushed to Shopify yet.
  4. When Trackstar sends the real shipment update with a tracking number, Luminous processes it and pushes the fulfillment and tracking to Shopify normally.

The customer receives a single, accurate "your order has shipped" notification with a valid tracking number.

What You May Notice in Luminous

If you are monitoring the Activity Log on a Shopify + MCF sales order and notice that a shipment update was received but no fulfillment push occurred, this is expected. Luminous is waiting for the real tracking number before pushing to Shopify.

No placeholder shipment record will be created for MCF updates that arrive without tracking.

Tips & Best Practices

  • No manual intervention is needed for MCF orders. The discard logic is fully automated.
  • If a Shopify MCF order appears "Unfulfilled" or "Partially fulfilled," do not attempt to manually re-push or create a new shipment without first contacting Support. Shopify may have already closed the fulfillment slot, and a second push will be rejected.
  • Verify your Shopify integration scopes are current. The fulfillment push depends on the correct Shopify permissions being active. See Recommended Quick Health Check for Your Shopify Integration if you are seeing unexpected sync issues.

FAQs

Q: Will customers receive a duplicate "order shipped" email? No. Shopify only fires the fulfillment notification once — when the real tracking number is pushed. The placeholder is discarded before anything reaches Shopify.

Q: My MCF order shows "Unfulfilled" in Shopify but appears shipped in Luminous. What's happening? This can happen if there is a delay between Amazon sending the placeholder and the real tracking arriving. If the order remains stuck, contact Luminous Support with the order number.

Q: Does this affect non-MCF Trackstar orders? No. The discard logic only applies to MCF orders. Standard Trackstar shipments are unaffected.

Q: Does this affect FBA orders? No. Amazon FBA orders follow a separate pathway. See FBA Orders Attempting to Push Fulfillment Orders for FBA-specific configuration guidance.

Q: Can I see which MCF shipment updates were discarded? Discarded placeholder updates do not create a shipment record in Luminous — the system quietly skips them. If you need to audit a specific order, contact Support and include the order number.
