Overview
When a sales channel integration (such as Shopify) is mapped to a deleted or discontinued Luminous SKU, incoming orders will be assigned to the wrong products — leading to incorrect inventory deductions and inaccurate sales reporting. This article explains how to identify and correct bad SKU mappings, and what downstream effects to expect after cleanup.
How It Works (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Navigate to your integration's product mapping page
- In the top-right corner of Luminous, click your name.
- Select Settings / Integrations.
- Find your integration (e.g., Shopify) in the list.
- Click the Manage Products icon button next to the integration.
This opens the product mapping table, which shows each channel product alongside the Luminous SKU it is currently mapped to.
Step 2: Identify incorrect or missing mappings
Review the mapping table carefully. Look for:
- Channel products mapped to a Luminous SKU that no longer exists (deleted or discontinued).
- Channel products mapped to the wrong active SKU.
- Channel products with no mapping at all (these will typically land in Purgatory).
Note: If a channel product is mapped to a SKU that has since been deleted or discontinued in Luminous, orders containing that product may resolve to incorrect items or pull inventory from an unintended source. These mappings do not automatically route to Purgatory — they can silently deduct inventory from the wrong SKU.
Step 3: Correct the mappings
For each incorrect row:
- Click into the LUM SKU column for that product.
- Search for and select the correct active Luminous SKU.
- Save your changes.
Repeat for all affected products. If you are unsure which Luminous SKU a channel product should map to, cross-reference your active SKU list under Inventory → SKUs.
Step 4: Use Automap to refresh matches (optional)
If you have many products and your SKU names closely match between the channel and Luminous, you can use the Auto-Map Product SKUs feature (in the Actions menu on the Manage Products page) to automatically re-match active SKUs. This is useful after a bulk cleanup of deleted/discontinued SKUs.
Important: Review automap results before relying on them — automapping works by name matching and may not catch products with different naming conventions between Shopify and Luminous.
Step 5: Re-pull affected orders (if needed)
If orders were already imported under incorrect mappings, correcting the mapping alone will not retroactively fix those orders. To correct affected historical orders:
- Identify the date range during which the bad mappings were active.
- Delete the incorrectly mapped orders in Luminous (this restores inventory deductions back to the wrong SKUs).
- Use Pull Orders to re-import those orders for the affected date range. The orders will now be mapped correctly on import.
Caution: Deleting and re-pulling orders affects inventory counts and order history. Confirm the scope with your team before proceeding, and consider contacting Luminous support if the affected date range is large.
Key Features / Options
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Manage Products | The product mapping table for a specific integration, accessible via the Manage Products icon button next to the integration on the Settings → Integrations page. Shows all channel products and their mapped Luminous SKUs. |
| Automap Product SKUs | Automatically attempts to match channel products to Luminous SKUs by name. Best used after a bulk mapping cleanup. |
| Pull Orders | Re-imports orders from your sales channel for a specified date range. Use after correcting mappings to ensure historical orders reflect the right SKUs. |
| Purgatory | Orders or line items with no valid SKU mapping land here for manual resolution. Note: mappings pointing to deleted SKUs may bypass Purgatory and silently resolve incorrectly. |
Tips and Best Practices
- Audit mappings when discontinuing or deleting SKUs. Whenever you remove a product from Luminous, check whether any active channel integration is still mapped to it. Leaving those mappings in place can cause future orders to deduct from the wrong SKU without any visible error.
- Do not rely on Purgatory to catch all bad mappings. Purgatory captures unmapped products, but a product mapped to a deleted SKU is still technically "mapped" — it will not surface in Purgatory.
- Review inactive products in the mapping table. The Manage Products page may include old or inactive channel products. While these do not need to be mapped, any that are mapped to deleted Luminous SKUs should be cleared.
- Correct mappings before requesting historical data backfills. If you need a support-assisted correction of historical sales report data, ensure all mappings are accurate first. Backfilling data against incorrect mappings will produce incorrect results.
- Document your SKU mapping conventions. Maintaining a simple reference of channel product names to Luminous SKUs reduces the risk of future mapping errors, especially when onboarding new products or renaming existing ones.
FAQs and Troubleshooting
Orders in Luminous show different products than what the customer ordered. What's wrong?
This is almost always a SKU mapping issue. Navigate to Settings → Integrations → Manage Products for your sales channel and verify the mapping for the products in question. Check whether the mapped Luminous SKU still exists and is active.
A product in my mapping table is pointing to a SKU that I can't find in Luminous. Why?
The Luminous SKU it was mapped to was likely deleted or discontinued after the mapping was created. Luminous does not automatically clear or redirect mappings when a SKU is removed. Update the mapping to point to the correct active SKU, or clear it if the channel product is no longer in use.
Will fixing the mapping correct my inventory counts for past orders?
No. Correcting a mapping only affects orders imported going forward. Inventory deductions that already occurred against the wrong SKU will remain unless the affected orders are deleted and re-pulled. Contact Luminous support if you need assistance with a historical correction.
Will corrected mappings fix my sales reports automatically?
Sales reports in Luminous attribute sales to the product currently associated with each order line. Once mappings are corrected and affected orders are re-pulled, historical reports for those orders will reflect the right products. If a large-scale backfill is needed across many orders, contact Luminous support for assistance.
My SKU names match between Shopify and Luminous — why didn't Automap work?
Automap performs name-based matching. If SKU identifiers differ between the two systems (even slightly), the match may not occur. Manual mapping is the most reliable method for ensuring accuracy.
