What period locking does
When period locking is enabled for your account, Luminous rejects any transaction dated on or before the close line you set in the Close the Books wizard. The block is proactive: the attempt is refused at the point of entry, not flagged after the fact.
Blocked transaction types:
- Inventory adjustments (manual and cycle-count)
- Receiving reports (both standard and supplier-PO receiving)
- Shipment inventory movements
- Cost-layer edits and manual cost overrides
Is period locking on for my account?
Period locking is off by default and is enabled per account by Luminous Support. To check your status:
- Go to Insights → Accounting → Close the Books.
- Advance to the Accept and close step.
- Read the lock summary sentence in the close confirmation area.
- "Luminous rejects any receipt, adjustment, shipment, or cost-layer edit dated on or before …" → enforcement is on.
- "It does not prevent later edits to transactions dated on or before … — period locking is not switched on for your account." → enforcement is off; the close is recorded for audit purposes only.
If you want enforcement turned on, contact Luminous Support.
What the error looks like
When a write is blocked, Luminous returns an error explaining that the date falls inside a closed accounting period and stating the close-through date. The transaction is not saved.
Exception: Close the Books remediation actions
The Close the Books wizard's own correction tools — such as applying a cost to a zero-valuation SKU before you close — are exempt from the lock. These actions must be able to write into the period being closed so you can fix issues found by the checklist. Any other write path, including manual API calls, is not exempt.
Important: the close line is permanent from this screen
Once you close through a date, the wizard will not let you close through an earlier date in a later session. There is no "reopen" button. If you need to adjust a closed period, contact Luminous Support.
Relationship to close events
Period locking only activates against close lines that were set through the Close the Books wizard (with enforcement on). A close-through date that was written before enforcement was enabled — or set outside the wizard — is treated as absent and does not block anything. This means enabling enforcement does not retroactively lock older periods; only periods closed after enforcement was turned on are enforced.
