Overview

In Luminous, "multiple tracking numbers" can arise in two distinct situations:

  1. A single sales order is split into multiple Fulfillment Orders — each ships at a different time or from a different location.
  2. A single Fulfillment Order ships in multiple boxes — each parcel leaves the warehouse together but is tracked individually.

Understanding which scenario applies to you determines how Luminous records, displays, and pushes tracking numbers. Both scenarios are handled automatically.

Scenario 1: Split Fulfillment Orders (one sales order → multiple shipments)

Luminous may split a single sales order into two or more Fulfillment Orders (FOs) for reasons such as:

  • Estimated Ship Date splits — items on the order have different planned ship dates, so Luminous groups them into separate FOs per date.
  • Warehouse splits — different items are stocked at different warehouses, so each warehouse ships its own FO.
  • "Fulfill separately" products — individual SKUs marked to ship on their own always receive a dedicated FO.

How tracking works: Each FO is an independent shipping record. When a label is printed for a FO, the carrier assigns a unique tracking number to that FO. A sales order with three date-based FO splits will ultimately have three separate tracking numbers — one per FO.

Your customer may receive multiple shipment notifications, one per FO, each with its own tracking link. This is expected.

For full details on date-based splits, see How does splitting a fulfillment order by estimated ship date affect tracking numbers?

Scenario 2: Multi-Package Shipments (one Fulfillment Order → multiple boxes)

Even when a single FO ships at once, you may need more than one box to fit all the items. In this case, Luminous generates a separate label — and a separate tracking number — for every parcel in the group.

How tracking works:

  • Each parcel gets its own tracking number and label, stored individually in Luminous.
  • All parcels from the same print action share a group identifier so they are managed together (reprinting, voiding).
  • A sequence number (1 of 3, 2 of 3, etc.) indicates each parcel's position in the group.

FedEx and UPS — master tracking numbers: For FedEx and UPS multi-piece shipments, the carrier also issues one master tracking number that represents the entire shipment group. Luminous stores this master number alongside each parcel's individual number. The FO detail view shows the master tracking number in the shipment header, with individual per-parcel numbers listed beneath.

For other carriers (EasyPost, USPS, DHL), there is no master tracking number — each parcel is treated as independent.

Scenario 3: Merged Orders (multiple sales orders → one shipment)

When two or more sales orders are combined using the Ship Together action, Luminous creates one merged Fulfillment Order covering all items. Only one shipment leaves the warehouse, so there is only one tracking number. Luminous automatically copies that single tracking number to every contributing sales order so each one shows accurate shipping information.

Pushing multiple tracking numbers to your sales channel (e.g. Shopify)

When a shipment has multiple distinct tracking numbers (multi-package scenario), Luminous can push a separate fulfillment record to Shopify for each tracking number, each listing only the items packed in that group of packages. This requires the Package-Aware Fulfillment Push setting to be enabled on your account.

If all packages share the same tracking number, a single standard fulfillment is pushed — no change from the normal flow.

Contact Luminous support to enable Package-Aware Fulfillment Push if your account does not already have it.

For full details, see How does Luminous push multiple tracking numbers to Shopify when an order ships in more than one package?

Voiding labels when multiple tracking numbers are involved

SituationVoiding behavior
Split FOs (each with its own label)Voiding one FO's label does not affect the others
Multi-package FO — FedEx or UPSThe entire parcel group must be voided together using the master tracking number; partial voids are not supported by these carriers
Multi-package FO — USPS, DHL, EasyPostEach parcel can be voided independently
Merged FO cancelledAll outstanding labels on the merged FO are automatically voided

Where to see tracking numbers in Luminous

  • Sales Order detail page — the Shipment Tracking #s field shows a de-duplicated list of all tracking numbers associated with that order (from shipments and any manually added numbers).
  • Fulfillment Order detail page → Shipments tab — lists each shipment with its tracking number; for multi-parcel shipments the master tracking number appears in the header.
  • Fulfillment Order detail page → Linked Fulfillment Orders tab — visible when an FO is part of a split or merge group, allowing navigation between related FOs.
